Santa Clara received its name from one of California's 21 Spanish missions, Mission Santa Clara de Asís, which remains a local landmark. Although the first Europeans arrived in 1769, Santa Clara was not founded until 1777. The settlement was incorporated as a town in 1852 and Santa Clara became state-chartered ten years later.

While its economy was once largely agricultural, today Santa Clara is the heart of Silicon Valley and serves as the headquarters of many American and international technology companies. The city's population has risen to 116,468, making Santa Clara the ninth most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is also one of the last refuges of the endangered burrowing owl.
